In the salon every decision we make is guided by two simple principles: care for people and care for the planet. Sometimes those principles meet in very practical, everyday choices — like the cups we offer you a drink in, or the towels we use during your appointment.

Fully Compostable Cups — From Salon to Soil

We now use Naturepac fully compostable disposable cups in the salon. These aren’t just “biodegradable in theory” — they are genuinely compostable in domestic compost bins.

Once used, they don’t go to landfill. Instead, they go straight into my compost bins and compost piles on my large organic vegetable plot, where they break down naturally and return nutrients back to the soil. That soil then grows food — completing a true circular process rather than creating waste.

It’s a small item with a big impact.

Bamboo Eco Towels — Hygienic, Gentle & Zero Waste

Alongside this, we’ve introduced Eco Towels made from bamboo, which are also fully compostable. After their use in the salon, these too are composted on the veg plot.

They have an added benefit beyond sustainability — they’re incredibly useful in the garden. Once composted or partially broken down, they’re excellent for mulching around fruit trees, helping to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil health, I also use them to suppress weeds in the no dig approach as they contain less chemicals than cardboard.  

Nothing is wasted. Everything has a purpose.

Responding to Hygiene Concerns — Thoughtfully

We’re also very aware of client concerns around hygiene, particularly with the recent rise in cases of flu and seasonal illness.

Using compostable single-use items where appropriate allows us to offer extra reassurance, without reverting to plastic or environmentally harmful alternatives. It’s about striking a balance — maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and care, while staying true to our low-tox, ethical values.

A Different Way of Thinking

For me sustainability isn’t about perfection — it’s about intention and responsibility. It’s about asking:

•Where does this come from?

•Where does it go next?

•And does it harm, or does it give back?

By choosing compostable cups and bamboo eco towels, we’re reducing waste, supporting soil health, and responding compassionately to client wellbeing — all at the same time.
