The Healing Power of Growing Your Own Food—What’s It Got to Do with Running a Hairdressing Salon?

A Connection to Nature and Well-Being

Growing organic vegetables has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a child, I spent time in the garden with my mother, learning to nurture the soil, care for plants, and respect the rhythms of nature. Now, as an adult, I still grow my own food—not just for the fresh produce, but for the sense of well-being it brings.

I’ve explored many ways to support my mental and physical health, from yoga and tai chi to meditation. Each has its benefits, but there’s something uniquely grounding about working with the land. Gardening has a natural rhythm—planting, tending, and harvesting—all of which keep me in the present moment. It’s a slow, steady process that teaches patience, mindfulness, and the rewards of working in harmony with nature.

It’s no coincidence that some of the longest-living people in the world share this habit. In the so-called “Blue Zones,” where people often live to 100 and beyond, growing food is a common thread. These communities move naturally, eat seasonally, and connect with the land. It’s a simple lifestyle, but one that clearly supports longevity and health.

So, what’s all this got to do with running a hairdressing salon? Quite a lot, actually.

Bringing the Same Philosophy Into the Salon

In my salon, I take the same approach to hairdressing as I do to growing food—working with nature, using ingredients that nourish rather than harm, and creating an environment that supports health and balance.

Just as I avoid synthetic chemicals in my garden, I’ve moved away from the harsh, toxic products that are so common in the hairdressing industry. Instead, I focus on using gentler, more natural alternatives that are better for my clients, my team, and the planet.

At its core, both gardening and hairdressing are about care—care for ourselves, for others, and for the world around us. The small choices we make, whether it’s growing food organically or using more sustainable salon products, add up. They create a healthier, more balanced life, not just for us but for future generations.

If I’ve learned one thing from growing my own food, it’s this: When we work with nature rather than against it, we thrive—physically, mentally, and emotionally. And that philosophy extends far beyond the garden.
