Why I don’t use traditional shampoos - Written By James Wood
Most hairdressers use traditional chemicals laden shampoos and as a result 50% will develop dermatitis (PMCID: PMC1952494 PMID: 17717371)
These same shampoos are what the supermarket shelves are stocked with and what most people use at home, they contain harsh detergents and synthetic ingredients that create a frustrating cycle: your hair looks good on day one, feels dry by day two, and becomes greasy by day three.
The problem lies in how traditional shampoos work. They strip away the scalp’s natural oils, which are essential for protecting and nourishing your hair. In response, your scalp produces excess oil to compensate, leaving you with greasy roots. At the same time, these shampoos dry out your scalp and hair, leading to flakiness, irritation, and other scalp conditions.
Conditioners don’t help much either. Instead of restoring your natural oils, they coat your hair with synthetic residues like resins, plastics, waxes and silicones that come from petroleum by-products…. that leave a waxy build-up. Over time, this coating blocks the scalp’s essential oils from nourishing your hair. Beneath the synthetic sheen, your hair becomes increasingly dry, brittle, and prone to damage.
If you’ve ever noticed that your hair looks dull and damaged when skipping conditioner, it’s because traditional shampoos and conditioners often create the problem they claim to solve. The result? Hair that isn’t just dull but genuinely damaged.
Taking care of your scalp and hair starts with understanding how these products affect them—and exploring gentler, more natural alternatives that support long-term scalp wellness.
